I don't think DDL was the frontrunner. Gangs of NY wasn't that well received, especially for a Scorsese movie.
I think there had to be some vote-splitting amongst the big names. I always liked The Pianist. I had to watch it in school, along with Anne Frank and Schindler's List.
Matthew McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio never had to really compete at any major award show, so I'm not sure why pundits think it will be so easy for MMc to win.
