It's not like they went from playing secret basement clubs to touring with Katy Perry all of a sudden. Last year, they've done so many performances and promo stunts that already made them more mainstream and introduced them to the pop world, and besides they've always been known for touring with a diversity of artists.
Last year, they peformed with Taylor Swift at one of her concerts, they did Katy's charity event, they toured with fun., they performed on Ellen and other shows. Those are not exactly indie audiences they were trying to reach with that. They have been in this business for 15 years, releasing 6 albums before Heartthrob and the broad masses never noticed them. They want to break out of their indie niche and that's why they wrote Heartthrob and are doing all these things now.
I respect them less for doing this, and not really JUST because it's for Katy.
