I feel like the main problem with the WiiU is that Nintendo keeps marketing it towards younger kids, when most of the owners are people in their 20s. To be quite honest there has not really been a highly anticipated game released on the WiiU besides for SMW3D. They are releasing all their popular games to 3DS, and giving dust to the WiiU.
The console was doomed from the beginning. When it first launched, all the games sucked. They should have released it when all the big games would come out, which is yet to come. And the fact they missed out on a proper E3 conference last year was one of the stupidest things imaginable. They need to bring out something BIG for the WiiU and shove it down everyone's throats like they did for everything during the Wii era. They are kinda just releasing stuff and being quiet about it.
They do have some amazing games coming out though. Smash Bros has a HUGE fanbase and it's going to be difficult for some fans to switch from a gaming console to a handheld version, so I can see that doing wonders for the WiiU sales. I haven't played the console much but from what I've seen it's a really big improvement over the Wii, especially graphics wise. Nintendo just has to put it out here.

The Wii was a massive success because of its "innovative" controller, and they tried to create the same massive appeal with the tablet controller. Most people got over the Wii once they got over the controller hype (me included) and they're simply not interested in another console with yet another gimmicky controller. Let's all admit that our Wii's were gathering dust in a closet after a few months, while the PS3 's and 360's are still connected on our living rooms.
They should just create another console that is actually next gen instead of creating a subpar console that only has a tablet controller as the main selling point. Gives me Apple teas the way they try to market these gimmicks (the 3d of the 3DS is another lame gimmick that nobody really uses) as if they're actually groundbreaking. Although at least the 3DS took off because of its usability, instead of the 3d.

Agreed. The WiiU is basically Wii 2.0 with a bigger controller and better graphics, which isn't really anything special. As you said they should have tried to make a next gen console with aspects we have never seen before. And yeah the Wii controller is just unbearable now. It was cute and nice at first but for playing real GAMES it's a nightmare. The only reason I turn on my Wii nowadays is to play games where I can use the Gamecube controller as an alternative.
Anyways, I don't have a WiiU or 3DS. I plan on getting one eventually. I'm not sure yet. I'm waiting for SSB4. On one hand, I want a WiiU because I've known SSB on a console for my entire life, and can't imagine playing it on a handheld. But on the other hand, there aren't many good games on the WiiU and getting a 3DS would give me an opportunity to experience a whole library of good games I've been missing out on these past few years.
Honestly, I think the only big problem is with the games released so far. I mean yes, Pikimin 3, SMBU, SMW3D etc are attractive games, but those aren't enough. It seems like they jumped the gun a bit and it obviously affected the console big time.
Where's Zelda? Mario Galaxy 3? Pokemon? Kirby? Star Fox? Metroid? Mario Strikers Charged 2 ()?
I mean, even Mario Kart and Smash Bros are taking forever to be released.
The situation won't get any better until they start releasing the big games, imo.
