Pitchfork's 40 Most Anticipated Albums of 2014
Frank Ocean
Quote:
For a moment, Frank Ocean was threatening to leave his indelible debut album Channel Orange as his sole statement. Thankfully, it was a brief moment. In February of last year, he admitted to being "10, 11 songs" into his new project (which he would only commit to calling a "thing") to BBC's Zane Lowe. In October, he responded to a Tumblr ask about when to expect the project with a terse "when the summer comes around again." Title? Tracklist? Features? Please. Ocean throws elegant side-eye shade at the smallness of your needs. The only scrap of semi-concrete information for fans to hold onto? In the Zane Lowe interview, he mentioned Tame Impala, Danger Mouse, and King Krule as "people he'd like to work with" and said: "At the end of Channel Orange, there's 'Golden Girl' and it's this beach scene. And I kind of wanted to extend that feel into the next record altogether." — Jayson Greene

Kanye West
Quote:
Last year had Kanye West gloriously hogging the spotlight once again, and don’t expect 'Ye to cede his shine in 2014—with a number of potential DONDA initiatives apparently in the works and a forthcoming fashion line with Adidas, his cultural omnipotence is all but inevitable. The shape or timeframe of these endeavors is TBD: He may return with a new “eight song” album that’s co-produced by Q-Tip and Rick Rubin, or a possible sequel to Watch the Throne, or both. One thing you probably won’t see, though—a wide release date for his much-anticipated Nike sneaker. —Corban Goble

Nicki Minaj
Quote:
Following the release of 2012’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Nicki Minaj expressed a desire to return to her grittier mixtape sound. Then, in late 2013, the reigning female MC released a remix of PTAF's “Boss Ass Bitch” that finds Minaj barking out tongue-twisting metaphors and promising her own hard-hitting return in an entrancing, unrelenting coo. She subsequently confirmed plans for a 2014 album. —Molly Beauchemin

OutKast
Quote:
Who do you believe, Queen Latifah or more than a decade’s worth of evidence that OutKast are no longer a functioning artistic unit? Since Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, we’ve heard not a single note of new OutKast music besides the one-off single “Royal Flush” (what is this “Idlewild” of which you speak?). But no one expected OutKast to be headlining Coachella in 2014 (or any year for that matter) either, why not hope for a minute that Andre 3000 and Big Boi may be using their 40-festival gauntlet as a means of road-testing new material? After all, the man himself said nothing lasts forever... so what makes an OutKast hiatus the exception? —Ian Cohen

This is one thing I'm worried about with Frank because I am NAWT here for Tame Impala
That said I'm sure he'll deliver nonetheless

Solange
Solange Knowles has been steadily releasing music for a full decade now, but there's a sense that her upcoming full-length album marks a new beginning to her career. She's spent the last couple of years carving out a nice little niche for herself and finding new air to breathe—after her excellent True EP, she seemingly parted ways with producer Dev Hynes, launched her own imprint (Saint Records) through Columbia, relocated to New Orleans, and corralled a group of forward-thinking R&B friends for a compilation. Last year, Solange said she's been working with collaborators including Dirty Projectors' Dave Longstreth, Chairlift's Patrick Wimberly, and Sampha. —Carrie Battan
