When she released BTW, the critics acclaimed it, it was up for AOTY and it was so unique. No other female pop star was doing this eclectic 80's rock sound. Unfortunately, two things happened. One was a bad singles release schedule. The other was that a good majority of her fanbase is just too young to appreciate BTW's really good throwback sound. Electric Chapel would have been universally loved by the older generation but is routinely (and ignorantly) regarded as a throwaway track by a lot of monsters.
"I want Gaga to do a generic dance pop album" is all I heard for months. And then she did. And we got this album, these numbers and by far her worst critically received album to date.
Fans are too insistent on saying that BTW was the beginning of the end, when really that was a solid era for her that only suffered from poor organization. The music was still there.

The music was not there at all. Gaga lost a large chunk of her fans
because of the BTW era, hence Applause underperforming. The success of BTW was mostly from her gaining fans during TFM era, as well as hype. Not the music.
You Monsters are most of the reason behind her meltdown anyway. Ya'll acted like she was some musical deity gracing us with her artful ways and creative talents when all she's ever been is a basic pop star just like everyone else who's out there scooting and booting for $1.29 on iTunes. Ya'll really thought she was something special, and because ya'll were so rabid, loud, and obnoxious about her supposed superiority, she believed it. She exploded quickly because she was new and wore kooky costumes, not because she was great. The sooner you all, and most importantly, she realizes this, the better.
