With a lot of popstars there are always people who have gotten the impression that people who make pop music are merely label puppets who contribute nothing but a medium with which to sell songs written by somebody else and even if the artist writes their own songs then pop songs become "easy" to make.
Another thing I've noticed is that people don't applaud a popstar for writing a pop song but as soon as some indie/small time artist picks up a guitar and does something as simple as to slow it down or something they get praised they've just done something innovative.
An example of this attitude is when Jessie J was first getting hype around her and I showed my friend Jessie performing an acoustic version of Price Tag and his response was "oh she's a decent singer but she just sings silly pop songs and is probably forced to sing them" and also when I gig I always perform "Time After Time" acoustically and people always approach me saying how I improved the original and how I'm so talented when literally all I've done is simply sing with a guitar without all the pop production the original has, I just don't get it.
So anyways, what do you think is the reason behind this view towards popstars?
Because they have the image of being highly sexualized. Now this is just a form of sexism since this is what they get attacked on. With male artists, its because they are viewed as mainly female music. Which again is due to sexism.
Together they are seen as making mindless music to cater to the masses.
Because they don't believe their plastic and over the top manufactered image can be real. They may be right in some aspect but I think pop girls' music is much deeper than it seems
Apart from sexism, it's a perceived lack of musicianship by generally not playing instruments and also drawing focus to flashy performing skills and stage productions.
It's a social stigma that a lot of people have without even thinking about it, so it ends up coming natural to them to think higher of non pop-star music.
Can I just make it clear that I don't think Rihanna is talentless, but she certainly adds into the whole popstars are manufactured, idiots view imo
Not when she has won 6 Grammy Awards and has delivered acclaimed performances like Diamonds at the AMAs. Only on ATRL do people ever try to call her untalented. I'd say artists more like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga cause people to view popstars as being manufactured.
Because they're viewed as artists that make music to sell. Everyone enjoys pop music to a certain degree, though, but not a lot will admit it since a lot of people have the need to feel special and liking something that everyone likes makes it "cheap" and it makes them feel "cheap".
There's something in our nature that is beyond our control when it comes to catchy music. For an example, "Call Me Maybe". Carly Rae Jepsen is not a "better" popstar, and the song is pure pop and its also one of the catchiest tunes of all time. Had it not become a meme, not many people will admit to enjoying the song, or at least make fun of it or announce how they annoyed they are by it and jam-laugh to it with their friends without directly admitting they enjoy the song. It has become "acceptable" by the general public that Call Me Maybe is a different, special song that is not like the other pop songs. They made it into an event, which will not hurt the reputation of the attendance. On the contrary, if they hop on the Call Me Maybe train they'll be a part of whats "in" today.
