Artist slams Gaga for stealing her meat dress idea
Quote:
Artist wore meat dress 30 years before Lady Gaga did
Lady Gaga may have caught the world's attention when she wore a dress made of raw beef cuts at the 2010 VMAs, but it was artist Linda Sterling who did it first.
In an interview with the Guardian, Sterling was asked whether the amount of publicity Lady Gaga received annoyed her.
"A little bit" she said. "The lack of acknowledgement. Our generation always acknowledged our influences. That does not seem to happen so much any more."
Sterling, who wore a dress made of discarded chicken meat during a performance in 1982, added: "You have to do it, though, otherwise people don't go on the great journey of discovery that impelled you to become an artist... History, after all, is one big dressing-up box."
Lady Gaga, who recently denied reports that the poor performance of her new album ARTPOP led to label staff being fired, explained the meat dress as an example of the need to "fight for our rights." Tenuous stuff.
In 1982, a few decades before Lady Gaga, you performed at the Hacienda in a meat dress. Did it rankle that she attracted so much publicity for repeating the gesture?
A little bit. The lack of acknowledgment. Our generation always acknowledged our influences. That does not seem to happen so much any more. You have to do it, though, otherwise people don't go on the great journey of discovery that impelled you to become an artist. An artist is not hermetically sealed off from the world. History, after all, is one big dressing-up box.
i hope Gags doesn't have one of those Google Alerts for whenever someone writes an article about her.. if so her phone must be buzzing every second of every day
Oh, so because this woman did it at a one-off performance 28 years before (with a different meat no less), that means that Gaga must have necessarily been inspired by her? Mess.
