Okay, let’s talk about the new album. It’s your first self-titled album which some reviewers seem to be making a big deal about. Is it a big deal?
I guess the album is just very me. It shows all the different sides to me and hits on all the styles of my last four records and then I’ve explored and experimented a bit with new production sounds, songwriting styles and vocal performances so it’s the me you know and a little bit more.
Do you like spending time in the studio? Because for some artists working on music can sometimes be a little like going to the dentist.
I do, I really enjoy writing songs and creating! There’s an exciting energy around. Everyone is excited for new music and it feels good, and I enjoy performing the songs and singing in the recording booth. Yes, it’s refreshing. Especially since I usually tour every record. You have to switch it up.
How long did it take you to make Avril Lavigne?
It took about a year, year and a half.
And do you do all your songwriting in the studio? Because with all the technology we have these days you can almost do your whole album on your Smartphone.
I’m kind of old-school. I like booking my time. Going into the studio and writing there. I used to write in my hotel rooms a lot, but now I like to have the ability to write and to record it right away.
So you like to get it down while it’s still fresh?
Yeah. Because what happens is, it also helps with the process because you write a verse and say ‘I’m going to lay this down and see what it sounds like.
What your instrument of choice for songwriting?
A lot of the songs are written on a piano. About half and half. When I write on my own, with no one else. I typically use the piano. A lot of the songs—the ballads—are piano or acoustic guitar
When you go into the studio are you trying to write a pop-punk song every time. Or are you just trying to create something that makes you happy?
I enjoy lots of different styles of music so I’m writing ballads that are more heartfelt and emotional. And I also enjoy pop music. Typically pop-rock music. And I also enjoy rock music. So I like it all.
What are you trying to accomplish with your music?
I enjoy writing pop music and a lot of what I write is anthemic. I like to carry a message within my music, which is about inner strength and independence, and I always hope to encourage and inspire people.
