American Idol has shown us that great vocalists are a dime a dozen, but you need more than just the ability to be a vocalist to become a successful musical act. You need the X-Factor, a certain something that can capture the imagination of the audience and build a fanbase.

Great songs can be re-interpreted down the years by numerous different singers. It is harder to write a great song, a hit song, than it is to find someone to sing it. A singer with star power can really make a song a big success though, as not every songwriter has the star power to perform it and make a connection with the audience. To be a front-man of a band, a lead vocalist, the singer in the headlights. That is not for everyone. Not everyone has the right persona to pull that off, even if they can sing well. For example, some backing singers are perfectly wonderful singers but may lack the confidence or persona to step up to become a lead singer. There are lots of vocal coaches around, these people are technically very good singers, they know about making music but they are vocal coaches instead of massively successful singers. Maybe they lacked the persona to make it as a singer, or maybe they lacked good songs.

The songs are key though. There are many great vocalists who are big acts and sometimes they release a song that does not smash. Why is that? Have they suddenly lost their ability to sing? No, it is because the song is not so good and despite their vocals it struggles to win over the public and smash. A vocalist without a decent song is just a flop, no matter their vocal abilities.

Being a singer or a songwriter can be a path to riches and acclaim, but you need to be realy good cos otherwise you won't make it.

Anybody that has solid, truly solid, vocal talent, ability, and prowess is golden. People can always learn how to write and express themselves if they truly want to pour themselves into a song especially if they collaborate with actual songwriters. You can't teach someone how to sing well or stretch their vocal capacity if they don't have the God given ability from the get go.

I am confused as to how there are 5 pages of debate on a "superior talent."

People in their respective occupations of songwriting or singing will have varying levels of skill pertaining to their own profession. How can you compare that level of skill to a different field entirely? They are needed together to create music.

That's like saying the ingredients are more important to the baking of a cake than the recipe, or vice versa. They both exist and depend on each other to create a cake. Without one or the other you simply don't have a cake.

Singing obviously. If you're going to sing music, you better have a nice voice. And it takes more talent to be a good singer than to be a good songwriter.

Songwriting. Songwriters who are poor in singing but have creativity and a way with words can give their songs to singers to use them. But songwriters who are not that creative in their writing cannot hope to sell their songs to anybody.

Probably singing, but keep in mind that songwriting is important because without it, singers would have nothing to sing. Not to mention, singers can improve their singing, but songwriting really can't be acquired. You have to be naturally good at writing to be a really good songwriter, and you do with singing, too, but you can always improve your singing and with songwriting I feel like you're either good at it or you're not. Both are kind of equally important, though.

Anyone can be a singer, but songwriting can keep you in the industry for a long time after your days as a mainstream act are over.

It's more impressive and enviable to me to be able to write a really good song than to be a very good at singing. The latter is something that to some extent almost everyone can learn to do well at or even master, while songwriting is something most people can't really do even when they try. It requires a more unique talent and way of thinking and perception of the world.
