LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Yum! Brands’ (NYSE: YUM) 2013 World Hunger Relief efforts featuring World Food Programme (WFP) Ambassador Against Hunger, Multi-Grammy Award winner and international superstar Christina Aguilera, created unprecedented awareness and engagement and raised a record-breaking $37 million in overall cash and food donations for WFP and other hunger relief agencies.
“It is unacceptable that nearly 1 billion people around the world are going to bed hungry every night”
World Hunger Relief is the world’s largest private sector hunger relief effort, spanning more than 130 countries and territories, 40,000 KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurants and more than 1.5 million employees and franchise associates.
“It is unacceptable that nearly 1 billion people around the world are going to bed hungry every night,” said David Novak, Chairman and CEO, Yum! Brands, Inc. “We believe that it is our privilege and responsibility to do everything we can to make a difference in fighting world hunger to save lives.”
“I’m inspired and proud of our employees, franchisees and their families who have raised record-breaking funds and food donations and volunteered in their local communities toward hunger relief,” said Novak. “With the help of our global spokesperson Christina Aguilera lending her voice, we were able to raise more awareness than ever about this critical issue.”
Every U.S. dollar raised goes directly toward WFP’s operations to fight hunger worldwide, mostly to disaster relief, such as Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and school meals programs. Just one U.S. dollar provides meals to four hungry children at school.
“We are grateful for Yum! Brands’ ongoing commitment to working with us to achieve a world with zero hunger,” said WFP’s Executive Director Ertharin Cousin. “World Hunger Relief campaign funds will help WFP provide nutritious food to the world’s most hungry people. We greatly appreciate this support.”
Since World Hunger Relief launched in 2007, the effort has resulted in more than $185 million in cash and food donations for WFP and other hunger relief organizations and is helping to provide 740 million meals and save the lives of millions of people in remote corners of the world.
