When will Nintendo win its next GOTY award?
It has been more than 10 years since Nintendo last won a GOTY award overall. Why has Nintendo failed so much in this regard? Do they simply not release quality exclusives on their systems anymore? For reference, here is a complete list of all GOTY awards they have won in the last 10 years...
GOTY Awards in the last 10 years.
All Nintendo Games Combined:
2013:
Super Mario 3D World - 8
Pokémon X and Y - 2
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - 2
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - 1
2012:
Xenoblade Chronicles - 2
2011:
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - 18 (including Awards 2012)
2010:
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 19
Epic Mickey - 1
2009:
None
2008:
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 3
Wii Fit - 1
2007:
Super Mario Galaxy - 44 (including Awards 2008)
2006:
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 26
Wii Sports - 3
2005:
None
2004:
None
2003:
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - 7
= 136 Total
All these games failed to win GOTY for their respective years. For reference once again, here is a game that was able to win GOTY...
The Last of Us - 192
The Critics' Picks - 157
The Readers' Picks - 35
For merely reference again, here is another...
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - 111
The Critics' Picks - 73
The Readers' Picks - 38
Why has Nintendo failed to win, and when will they be able to win again? Will Mario ever win another GOTY (after Super Mario 64)? Will they have to win with a new IP? Thoughts?

GOTY is not an actual award, STOP IT. it is just a RANDOM agglomeration of European-American centered reviewers.
And The Last of Us sucks.

What are these numbers even of?
Game Of The Year awards are simply awards each publication comes up with for themselves which is why their are multiple given out throughout the year.
There is no single Game Of The Year

I mean this is like the 3rd time you make this same thread. Keep fuming at TLoU, her lack of remarkable sales, metacritic score and actual awards.

Yes there is. For example in 2007 MTV confirmed it to be Bioshock over Super Mario Galaxy.
Quote:
Well then I'd like to tell you what the Game Of The Game Of The Year is for 2007. See, in gaming, all accolades are measured as averages. So it is with Metacritic. So it is with the GOTGOTY. It matters not what any single outlet chose as the 2007 Game Of They Year winner was. It matters what, on average, they picked as GOTY.
The 2007 GOTY Winners
The Associated Press picked: "BioShock"
Destructoid picked: "BioShock"
Gamasutra picked: "Portal"
Game Daily picked: "Call of Duty 4"
Game Informer: "BioShock"
Gamepro picked: "Call of Duty 4"
Gamespot picked: "Super Mario Galaxy"
Gamespy picked: "Call of Duty 4"
Game Trailers picked: "Super Mario Galaxy"
IGN picked: "Super Mario Galaxy"
Joystiq picked: "Portal"
Kotaku picked: "Super Mario Galaxy"
The Los Angeles Times picked: "BioShock"
The Rocky Mountain News' Brian Crecente (aka editor of Kotaku) picked: "Call of Duty 4"
MTV Games picked: "Super Mario Galaxy"
MTV News (aka me) picked: "Desktop Tower Defense"
The New York Times picked: "Mass Effect"
Playboy picked: "BioShock"
The San Francisco Chronicle picked: 'BioShock"
The Spike TV Video Game awards picked: "BioShock"
Time magazine picked: "Halo 3"
UGO -- just barely -- picked: "BioShock"
X-Play picked: "BioShock"
Yahoo picked: "Super Mario Galaxy"
***
Tally that up. Notice which game appeared the most times. That game is... "BioShock." Ladies and gentlemen, that is your GOTGOTY. Anyone who picked anything else... just so you know, your vote was in vain. Mine too.

NeoGAF follows the same formula, and so do other major gaming sites. No one cares if you won a single GOTY award from some moderately known publication if you aren't the definitive GOTY.

Who cares? It's not like there's an official GOTY that everyone agrees on.
There's just one that gets more praise from publications than others.
GOTY doesn't even matter considering most games that get a nod can boast that they are GOTY even if it's just from ONE publication.
It's a ficitious title that's local to the publication that says it since other publications can disagree unlike an cumulative Metacritic score which includes all publications and their opinions on one game at a time.
tl;dr: Who cares when?
GOTY doesn't matter and most are forgotten unless they are apart of a series.

TLOU is around 5 million sales total (including digital copies), that is pretty remarkable when it is a new IP on a single platform. Games like Tomb Raider barely achieved half of that and they were established.

It was clear upon release and even more so six months later how important of an achievement The Last of Us is for the medium. Most importantly, however, The Last of Us proved how far video games have evolved and gave hope for where the medium would go — and managed to do so on seven year old hardware.

It's a kii that you can cling to Gaming publications of modern times when it's been proven time and time again that they are biased against Nintendo and their consoles.
The true fumes is when you have to copy and paste so many reviews to feel justified.
An opinion of one person on the internet has you pressed.
