One of the most interesting things about online communities such as ATRL is how it brings together different from people from all walks of life, who may not typically interact in day to day life. Amongst our ATRL community we have professionals, students, artists, young, old, thinkers, dreamers, etc. We come together from places all around the world to discuss what we're passionate about. And while the discussion of pop music is fun for us all, it's not always conducive to sharing the knowledge, ideas, and skills we have that make us unique.
Thus, the idea for ATRL Ted Talks was born.
For those of you who aren't familiar with what TED is, here is an abridged summary from their website:
Quote:
TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.
TED conferences bring together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives.
On TED.com, we make the best talks and performances from TED and partners available to the world, for free. More than 1500 TED Talks are now available, with more added each week. All of the talks are subtitled in English, and many in other languages, too. These videos are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.
Our mission: Spreading ideas.
We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. So we're building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other. This site, launched in April 2007, is an ever-evolving work in progress, and you're an important part of it. Have an idea? We want to hear from you.

I had the idea awhile back that it might be neat to host some sort of online ATRL summit where users have a chance to give a "talk" (make a thread) about something they're passionate about and want to share with the ATRL community. Topics could range from practical (how to make better GIFs, how to drag with class) to the more abstract (the importance of cultivating a positive online personality). It could even be a thread about a real life experience you've gone through that you think could enrich the thinking of our online community. Check out some TED talks on Youtube for a better idea of what I mean. We all come to ATRL with such varied experiences in our life, and this is a chance to share and teach those around us.
Anybody who would like to be part of making a presentation can PM me their topic and a *brief* synopsis about what your discussion would deal with. Please also mention how you feel it will benefit the ATRL community as a whole. From there, I will make selections regarding the final line-up of speakers, and planning will commence.
I think this is a unique experience on ATRL to move past our stan wars and sometimes superficial conversations and make use of the wide range of experts that visit ATRL on a daily basis. It's all about sharing our ideas, knowledge, and thinking in an effort to make the first ever ATRL Ted Talks summit a success! You may be surprised at what the people you talk to daily on here can bring to the table!
