5.Mat Zo - 'Damage Control'
SYNOPSIS.Mat Zo had a whirlwind year. Nobody knew that his collaboration with Porter Robinson would go on to become one of the major festival anthems of the summer. On top of that, a curveball was thrown his way when will.i.am was caught stealing his collaboration with Arty for his new solo album, which will not be named here since I only promote other artists. Mat Zo came out of it all alive, though. Instead of letting the highs and lows get to his head, he put out Damage Control, an eclectic EDM album which could not be mistaken for anyone other than Zo. The album is right in his niche - a unique blend of trance progression with dub elements. This is sadly one of the most slept on albums of the year, but nonetheless one of the greatest.
STANDOUTS.Easy, Pyramid Scheme, The Sky, Lucid Dreams
SYNOPSIS.Paramore returned in full force with their self-titled release, with five members down to three. This was truly a refreshing start for the band, or a rebranding in some ways. Frontwoman Hayley Williams says she feels like this is a completely new band now, a band they have been vying to be for years. If this album is any indication, they have finally hit the jackpot. Self-titled is one of the most raw and honest releases of the year. Hayley's chops will have you feeling a range of emotions and leave you in tears by the end of the album, only to restart the album listen all over again. Isn't that what the music is all about... making you feel something?

2.Wynter Gordon - 'Human Condition: Sanguine' - EP
SYNOPSIS.Wynter Gordon has blossomed into the songbird of the Internet age. While her contemporaries are using attention-seeking visuals and pretentious lyrical content, Wynter has kept very low-key, letting her music truly do the talking. Not only is she humble but versatile as well. She has smoothly transitioned from R&B to EDM to Alternative without misstep, and she has done it all in a genuine manner. It is a shame that the world has let her fly under the radar, for her talent speaks tenfold to what is heard on the today's hit radio stations. She is the greatest upcoming female musician in her own right. The train has just left the station, and it's not yet too late to come and enjoy the beautiful journey. Miss out, and you will be sorry. An authentic, raw, and real artist is hard to come by, but she takes human form in the one and only delightful Wynter Gordon.
SYNOPSIS.Kaskade is so underrated when you keep in mind that he artistically, he is the top dog in dance music. His latest effort, Atmosphere, cements his status as King of EDM. Kaskade doesnt do it for the fame. Kaskade doesn't do it for the fortune... for the charts, for the rankings, for the publicity, for the attention.... no, he is one of the few true artists in the world. He functions fully on talent and passion alone, and everything he does... he does for the fans. EDM is lucky to have a leading man like Kaskade because he not only makes a beautiful soundtrack for our lives, but he sets new music trends as well. Kaskade was one of the first in his genre to release traditional studio albums as would be done in pop or rock or any other genre, rather than a compilation album or a series of era-less singles. And with Atmosphere, Kaskade debuted as a singer on the title track, a single which catapulted to the top tier of songs released in 2013, as an anthem for the underdogs. He told the LA Times "This community is exceptional in its ability to bond all types together, and I am not exaggerating when I say it saves lives." He is in it for all of the right reasons, and he is a true inspiration for the world. Everyone could afford to be a little more like Kaskade. In regards to this album, it is sonically and creatively as pleasing for the ears as the man himself is to our hearts. Congratulations to the true winner of 2013, and may 2014 bring him more great lasting memories. Rock and rave, Ryan!
