The 14 year old emo in me is so glad they're back.
The album, however, was disappointing. Too samey; it lacked the lyrical bite and prowess of their glory days. This was a fantastic addition to their inevitable (second) Greatest Hits. So much pomp, grandioisity and ORCHESTRA SOUNDS.
Kay should be a lot more than what she is currently.
How can I describe her simplest? Canadian Ke$ha.
She's one of these acts that seems to constantly on the cusp of breaking through to the mainstream but just hasn't done it yet. She's worked with everyone. Far East Movement, LMFAO, Ryan Tedder, Diplo, Cobra Starship, Steve Aoki, Tiesto....but she's still waiting for that one defining smash.
For me? This should have done it. Either way, she's finally managed to get an album out after about 2 years of sweat and work. It's called My Name is Kay and you should probably check it out.
This came out ju-hu-hu-huuust before 2013 finished. It's eligible.
Let me plant my flag on the mast here: THIS is a smash hit. You will NOT get this out of your head, no matter how hard you try. It's impossible. Try it. You'll fail.
Karmin, basically. But so much better. And is it just me or does the guy sound exactly like Martin from Boys Like Girls? Is it him..?
Magical. Just discovered this in the last few weeks, and it's totally magical.
Like Max and Bianca, Owl Eyes comes from Aussie. She's not really made any waves outside the internet, but she should.
(I've given up on doing this ranking in any sentient order so I'm just putting whatever comes into my head as an 'amazing' song as the next one to be ranked before the thought to do so escapes me again)
If you've not discovered Bebe yet, you totally need to. She's so gut damn brilliant.
She's an old Lana-esque soul with contemporary production. In fact, eons better than Lana. This is by far the best example (though check out 'Deathwish' too)- it's a huge voice with the most brilliant dubstep breakdown in the chorus.
Max Elto is best known for working with David Guetta. Not under this actual appendage though- under the name Taped Rai, who featured on the Ultimate Edition of Nothing But the Beat.
This is nothing like that. What we have here is minimalist Sigúr Ros-esque **** with much more of a pop lean. The beat just gets trapped in your head. It's got a robotic, rhythmic feel that's so endlessly repetitive. And when the flute comes in, it just feels so right.
She's been making noises under the scene for a while now.
I've been reliably informed 2014 is when she 'breaks through'.
Everything about this ticks my box. The jungle production, the vocoder, the crescendo build-ups, her Solange-like cool-cat tone and demeanour. If you haven't heard about her yet, give it some time.
A little like Bebe, she's got the the whole retro-modern shtick down to a tee. She does everything in black and white and she looks a bit like the last winner of RuPaul's Drag Race a 50's sex symbol.
Great chorus on this one, super catchy. That's literally the only thing I ask for. It has to be catchy, whatever the genre.
