You might be getting promotion confused with hype. The only person with more hype than Bey this year was Gaga.

SO much backlash, in fact, that she's still winning fan-voted awards, left and right.

It's not hype in general that is important, it's positive and proper hype that is important.

Beyonce is an example of positive hype. She did the Superbowl, she had endorsements, she had a world tour and she kept herself in the limelight subtlely but effectively.

GaGa is an example of negative and incorrect hype, as in overexposure. She took a necessary break, but when she came back it felt like she was forcing herself down people's throats ("pop emergency"). Not very subtle, therefore counterproductive.

rihanna doesnt hype and she doesnt have impressive openings on songs or albums....so i think that hype still helps!

As someone who has been through backlash Hell and back, I'll caution you against speaking so confidently. You wake up one day and everyone hates your fave. The signs are there, and if Taylor keeps bashing her exes she might be next on the chopping block. I think she needs some new material to remind us how talented she is.

The subtle shade. But yes, hype is very important. Not everyone is like Beyonce, who can put up an album out without any promo and sell as much. These artists need hype very much to support the release of their albums.

beyonce had plenty of hype. the OP is confusing hype with promo
if youre asking wether lots of promo is neccesary, it depends how big you are.

I think Beyonce had loads of hype, just the hype came all suddenly on the day she released the album, rather than 2 months before like everybody else does.

Bey had plenty of hype, she just didn't have promo.
But hype is still very important, not everyone is Beyoncé.

Beyonce's hype was that people were HUNGRY for her music, they wanted more of Beyonce. Beyonce was kept on people's minds because they wanted to hear her next release. She didn't force herself into the public. No one knew if there was an album coming or not, but they just wanted it.

Lady GaGa's hype is where she talked about the album, gives off key words about slaying, builds it up with fancy saying and promotional pictures, snippets, lead singles, and appearances and performances.

Only certain artist can have Hype like Beyonce, where as seen by the latter, it doesn't always work.
