Mariah is a legend and the best singer (along with Whitney) to come out of America since Aretha. She has co-writers (at least one) on all of her songs though. How can you judge song-writing ability of an individual from a song that has several credited with the songwriting? You cannot, you have to just judge on songs that have solo song writing credits.

Taylor has solo writing credits for about 49 tracks that have been published.
Mariah Carey has zero solo writing credits AFAIK.

That being the case it is hard to give this to the person with zero songs that we can use to judge their songwriting skills.

This has to go to Taylor who has won Grammy's and Grammy nominations for songs she has written by herself. Taylor has also written an entire album by herself.

Btw Taylor writes her own melodies.

Although, Taylor is more consistant, mariah's gems just shine MUCH brighter.. it's more than just lyricism..she has this uncanny knack for melodies and arrangements..and the way her vocals perfectly animate the sentiment of the lyrics being sung. In my opinion..

You Taylor stans keep going on and on about co-writers. You guys tend to emphasize the lyrical aspect of songwriting versus the melodic aspect. Yet, when faced with proof that Mariah essentially wrote every word on the Butterfly album, you still reject it.

And the credits don't always tell the full story. Sometimes there are featured artists. Sometimes there is a sample (The Wind, It's A Wrap). Sometimes people are credited for songwriting aspects that aren't lyrical. Songwriting does not only refer to lyrics.

Taylor can get away with having zero co-writers because she plays an instrument. Mariah doesn't. That's why a musician will often earn a songwriting credit without contributing a single lyric.
