There are a lot of people in this thread that are acting like western music is better than all those kpop songs that "sound the same" and "make no sense". In my opinion, people overrate western music too much and treat it like it's something above and completely different than the rest of the worlds music.

Well, the way I see it, the way some fans act about K-Pop acts is hilarious. The majority of them are heavily manufactured and have no input in their music or careers. They basically show up to dance and sing (and in many cases lipsynch) yet people have deluded themselves into thinking it's any better than music from western artists.

But it wouldn't be fair to say that K-pop is overrated because some of them are actually pretty good and very talented. I would say it's overrated by teenage fans outside of Korea who have an idealized view of Korean culture but I don't expect adults to act that way.

Let me read and cackle. When I read kpop artist don't have input on their music:
We just had a RealTV of 2 groups actively had a battle to debut. They had to write and produces their own material at every round.

They lipsynch: there is a game were all the Kpop acts have to SING live without backtrack or nothing and put a choreo and a concept.

The concept on KPop is more attractive than western pop for 2 or 3 things:
1 they have a concept around their music at each album and stick to it from song 1 to the end of the album or mini album.

2 they have more comeback then western pop in a year so we can our faves more often.

3 they promote 3 or 4 times a week their songs, so we actually have more performances and receipt to like or hate an artist.

4 their album is just more than just music, the package that come with, the poster and the photo book that come with it to explain the concept.

I mean I just ordered an album that contains 2 shirts, a mobile app, a photo book, a DVD and its written, produced and composed by the group and also a autographed for 29.99€ while when some western pop stars do it it 20 or 30 € more. Except for KPOP it's all the release that contains exclusive stuffs for the fans.

K-pop has it's setbacks just like any other genre regardless of language. But once in awhile you get artists who are authentic and original who writes their own lyrics and produces their own music. Artist who don't rely on autotune (except when needed for effect) or use dancing and flashy box set videos to try to distract people from the horrible song playing in the background. Whose versatility knows no bounds and can easily cross the border between electro dance pop to a more hip hop influenced track. By the way have you heard of this new rookie group called BigBang, they are kinda okay.
