You can't compare those albums to anything lady gaga has released though. Erotica for example came out during a time where sex was not spoken about in music or on TV. The climate in which eroitca came out was taboo.

ARTPOP is an album about sex, fashion and wealth that came out in a climate that cultivates sex fashion and wealth. The albums are completely different. Erotica also went on to change the scope of music.

and when Erotica was released was considered flop, the videos were blocked from television for it's explicit content, critics were bashing the album ... and even the album is nearing 2m US sales back at the time album sales wee like 100x bigger, then followed BS which also didn't perform quite as good as her previous albums and everyone was saying that with Madonna's career is over etc.etc.etc. but did that happened .... mhm she reinvent herself and made ROL .... which is now considered as her best album to date.

They still underperformed regardless of whatever BS you spew to try and negate that fact. Gaga also has factors against her currently that are causes for this underperformance as well but if you're choosing to ignore those factors you have to ignore the factors that played part in Madonna's underperforming albums as well! It's only fair.

It did actually, Instead of milking the success of her previous albums, instead of trying to create a new disco hit like Vogue, instead of flooding the market with her image and second-rate products, Madonna decided to go on a new route. She recreated her sound and her image.

And that sound and image went on to influence other artists shortly after erotica's release.

Musically, Madonna left the more mainstream sounds behind and pursued a more urban sound (at that time, hip-hop and urban music were not the norm on mainstream music yet).

Thematically, Erotica discussed more adult and serious topics: homosexuality, prejudice, AIDS, love and sex.

Que: the albums that came AFTER erotica. - Leaving the mainstream sounds.
