Not to mention around the world such acts like Girls Aloud found fame from singing competitions.
Eurovision acts anyone?
To say Kelly is the first successful artist to come out of a singing competition is kind of ludicrous. She definitely is one of the major players but not the first. She didn't set the trend and it's not really a record. She's just successful.

I get what you mean but I wouldn't call Star Search the big break for any of those artists, the format was always meant to be more of a spotlight than a career launchpad. So many contestants cycle through, many of them have even ended up auditioning for Idol or other competitions afterward.
And I'm pretty sure Girls Aloud were formed after Kelly won Idol, and the format to their show actually changed to follow the Idol voting. In past seasons it just showed the audition processes and judges picked the final group.
And Eurovision uses established acts from their respective countries doesn't it?
The fact that when Kelly won there was still so much backlash and doubt about her and the show kind of shows that this reality thing never really worked. That backlash still exists but now these shows have someone like Kelly they can name to suggest that it actually is possible to find stars from these competitions, as rare as it happens.
