Rihanna tops charts with online single
CHART history has been made in Australia this week with the first-ever No.1 single you cannot buy in stores.
Rihanna’s Don’t Stop the Music topped the singles chart yesterday on digital sales alone.
The historic feat is another nail in the coffin of the physical single.
Many record stores no longer stock singles.
Don’t Stop the Music has been belatedly released as a CD single this week, although the physical sales will only count towards next week’s charts.
ARIA, which compiles Australia’s charts, included digital and physical sales in singles charts from last October.
Don’t Stop the Music is Rihanna’s third Australian No.1 single.

Umbrella Singer Ready To Star At Brits
RIHANNA is ready to set the Brits alight on Wednesday with a sizzling birthday peformance.
The Umbrella star has been keeping quiet about her party plans in London - but let the significance of the date slip at an early 20th birthday bash in LA.
Guests at the swank Les Deux club included Kanye West and That 70s Show’s Wilmer Valderrama.
Rihanna’s rumoured new boyfriend singer Chris Brown sang an acappella version of Happy Birthday.
But Brits bosses will be hoping the UK round of her celebrations don’t end up as messy as the American leg which descended into a massive food fight.
One insider said: “There was icing all over Rihanna’s face and the group was laughing to the point of almost tears.”
Another performer, Mika, has been in hot water with Brits organisers for spilling the beans on his appearance.
The camp Lebanese singer has been nominated for an incredible four awards including best single and best album.
He said: “I’ve been overly involved, they’re not used to that. Award ceremonies are a bit of a meat market but the nominations are an honour.”

NEW YORK, USA: BET J will air a 30 minute tribute this weekend for GRAMMY-winning international singing sensation Rihanna, who is from the Caribbean island of Barbados.
Partnering with the Barbados Tourism Authority, BET J will premiere the InVideo special on Saturday, February 16 at 2:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. ET/PT. The special will repeat on Monday, February 18 at 3:30 p.m.; Wednesday, February 20 at 3:30 p.m.; and Friday, February 22 at 3:30 p.m.
BET J’s InVideo show, which airs selections of the hottest urban classics from the video vaults, will highlight all of Rihanna’s videos, including the Grammy-winning Umbrella as well as Don’t Stop the Music and Hate That I Love You, both Grammy nominations.
Cybelle Brown, BET J’s Vice President of Sales and Business Development
“We are honored to join hands with the Barbados Tourism Authority, the government and people of Barbados to celebrate the accomplishments of this Caribbean sensation,” said Cybelle Brown, BET J’s Vice President of Sales and Business Development, who comes from the neighboring island of St. Lucia.
“Words can’t express the excitement and the joy that all Barbadians felt when our Barbadian superstar Rihanna won a Grammy Award after being discovered only two years ago,” said Barbados’ newly elected Prime Minister David Thompson, who along with Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy deliver congratulatory messages during the special. “It was a historic moment for the people of this country. But most of all I want to thank Rihanna for remembering Barbados.”
Minister Sealy thanked the singer for promoting Barbados as a tourist destination. “(This) means a lot to us - we congratulate her for her success but we thank her for giving back to the nation.”
Highlighting the mutually rewarding relationship BET J has had with Barbados through the years, Cybelle Brown hinted that a magazine style special was on the cards featuring Minister Sealy and Rihanna, both graduates of Barbados’ distinguished Combermere High School.
Robyn Rihanna Fenty, nominated for six Grammys, won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for her hit Umbrella, featuring Jay-Z. “We are so proud of Rihanna. Winning the Grammy is another step in what has been a magical ride - and what’s more amazing is that her ride has only just begun,” said Evan Rogers, CEO of SRP Records, who discovered Rihanna while on vacation with his Barbadian wife Jackie, a former national tourism executive.

Rihanna’s food fight
Rihanna celebrated her 20th birthday with a cupcake fight.
The ‘Umbrella’ singer - who doesn’t turn 20 until next Wednesday (20.02.08) - was partying with friends including Kanye West and actor Wilmer Valderrama at Los Angeles’ Les Deux nightclub when the food fight began on Tuesday night (12.02.08).
An onlooker said: “There was cupcake frosting all over Rihanna’s face and the group was hysterically laughing to the point of almost tears!”
Chris Brown, who is rumoured to be dating Rihanna, was later given a standing ovation after he sang her an acapella version of ‘Happy Birthday’.
Despite Chris insisting he and Rihanna are “just friends”, onlookers at the exclusive club said the pair were “cuddling and acting very cosy all night”.
The couple also attended the Grammys together last weekend (10.02.08) and stocked up on goody bags.
Rihanna picked up Balenciaga sunglasses, while 18-year-old Chris took home two pairs of Marc Jacobs sunglasses in red and blue.
When they realised they might be photographed together, Chris insisted they should leave.
A Grammys source said: “Chris was telling her they needed to go, and in seconds they were gone.”
