No. But students have to pick 2 foreign languages to study all the way until the end of high school. Most people pick english as the first language and spanish as the second language, which is what I did too.

Italian, German and Japanese were spoken in some areas in beginning of the 20th century, when the country received millions of immigrants, but were also prohibited during the nationalist dictatorship Estado Novo in the 1930s.
