Discussion: Are YouTube Stars Forced Stereotypes?

YouTube celebirties are nothing new, and "Youtube Famous" isn't something strange to hear. But something that I noticed was some of the more famous and most known YouTubers seem to be the ones that enforce the most stereotypes of gays and black people. Does this just prove that people only want to watch them if they are the typical stereotypical black or gay? Its no surprise the portrayal of Gays in TV is always a flaming tiny queen and black woman are always sassy and in charge.

But does this enforce it more?

(I'm not hating on any of these YouTubers, I love Shanna and Glozell)

For a Youtube star, you have to appeal to the masses to maintain your popularity and to keep that $$ from YT coming in, so

. They do what they need to. I don't think people necessarily look for stereotypical people.

Well it has to do with what types of videos they do. A lot of YouTubers do humor, and stereotypes are typical in black/gay humor.

None of them act like that irl, they do it to get attention which is sad. But I do see your point, the popular ones are usually the stereotypical gays / sassy black women.

Watching someone in a video who's "normal" is boring. You could stand in front of a mirror and it would be the same. And those in the videos probably know this very well too.

Yeah but a lot of the stereotypes that are used as jokes are so dated. It comes off more offensive than funny at this point for me yet the masses enjoy it.

Idk, I think Youtubers have gone to the pits in term of quality. Youtube is only good for the occasional funny video and keeping up with pop girls' performances and celebs being celebs. Youtubers are being try-hard to get the coins and their main demographics are 12 - 16 so, they eat up the stereotypes.

I see what you're talking about, the most popular gay youtubers tend to be the ones that are loud, sassy, flamboyant, etc. and I find it kind of annoying tbh

YES. I watch Youtubers who don't force those stereotypes and sadly they are not noticed. It's like Youtube wants to see the stereotypical Youtubers.

Glozell is the most unfunny person I have ever seen; I don't get the hype with her. But yes, I do believe stereotypes are perpetuated on Youtube for the sake of views. I mean, I'm not knocking their hustle but then again Glozell (for instance) can't get/be mad if someone calls her "ghetto" when her channel enforces said behavior.
