Forbes - 1D's 'Where We Are' Tour : top 10 of all time ?
Quote:
Over the last two years, there has been no hotter ticket than One Direction tickets. The boy-band, which was formed on X-Factor, has been touring non-stop over the last two years, leaving a wake of screaming teens behind. The ‘Take Me Home’ Tour ended in November and the ‘Where We Are’ tour begins in April, which means that between February 2013 and October 2014 the band will have played 196 shows. If you throw in the ‘Up All Night’ Tour from 2012, the total goes up to 258 in a three-year period. That makes the band one of the most active touring acts in the last five years. The two previous tours, however, were just warm-up acts for Where We Are. With 65 shows currently planned, the stadium tour will likely gross more than $300,000,000 in ticket sales. Based on the below calculation, that would put it into the top ten grossing tours of all time.
Number Of Shows: 65
Average attendance per show: 55,000
Avg. Face Price: $88
Gross Sales: $314,600,000
For a band that’s been around for less than five years, those numbers would put One Direction in legendary company, along side U2, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Madonna, The Police and Bruce Springsteen–all bands in or bound for the rock and roll hall of fame. Perhaps what’s most impressive about Where We Are is the fact that they would achieve these numbers with twenty less shows that any other tour in the top ten, listed below. The next closest is Madonna who had 85 shows on her 2008-09 ‘Sticky and Sweet’ tour. The number one all-time grossing tour–U2’s 360 Tour–had a total of 110 shows. If One Direction was to play 110 shows with the same level of demand, it would make ‘Where We Are’ the 3rd highest grossing tour of all time.
Rank Gross Band Tour Year Shows Attendance/Show
1 $736,421,584 U2 U2 360° 09–11 110 66,110
2 $558,255,524 Rolling Stones A Bigger Bang 05–07 144 32,500
3 $458,673,798 Roger Waters The Wall 10–13 219 18,858
4 $441,121,000 AC/DC Black Ice World 08–10 167 29,023
5 $407,713,266 Madonna Sticky & Sweet 08–09 85 41,716
6 $389,047,636 U2 Vertigo 05–06 131 35,259
7 $358,825,665 The Police Police Reunion 07–08 156 21,160
8 $320,000,000 Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge 94–95 124 51,103
9 $314,100,000 Springsteen Wrecking Ball 12–13 112 29,071
10 $311,000,000 Rolling Stones Licks 02–03 115 30,182
While we’re just beginning Winter, the Summer of 2014 is already shaping up to be one of the hottest concert seasons in recent memory. Along with One Direction, Demi Lovato tickets, The Wanted tickets and Miley Cyrus tickets will be all be in high demand amongst the teen set. ‘Where We Are’, however, is proving to be in another league, and one that could put One Direction in the record books along some of greatest names in music history. Whether they have the staying power to evolve into anything more than a boy band remains to be seen, but if they do crack the top ten, it wouldn’t be their first historic achievement this year. After the release of the Midnight Memories album, One Direction became the first group to reach No. 1 with their first three albums since 1967. The last band to achieve that feat was another band born of TV: The Monkees.
If you’re looking to finish out 2013 with a bang before looking ahead to the summer of 2014, here’s a list of the top New Years Eve shows.

That will be crazy if they do gross that much. Are their tickets selling well?

Well enough for Forbes to write an article, whatever that suggests (this basically means that I have no idea how to check how well they're selling).

If only they could add a date in North Korea in the Rungnado May Day Stadium (150.000 capacity).

Wow, so this is why Simon is investing so much money into Leona again. New, great management, top notch promo, etc.
Thanks One Direction. Now I hope they don't fade. Maybe they'll also pay for that Bruno Mars collab as well.

Well the money Leona made was probably of great use to launch 1D so I guess it's only fair they're giving back.

Don't hate these guys, but it's unfair because if they weren't hot they would sell one tenth of those numbers.

The same could be said for 99% of every singer out there including Rihanna.
