There is a reason the story is blowing up, What she did was disrespectful. There was no reason to use the sample and it had no big relevance to the song or most likely any at all.

Well it makes sense with the song, but I'm not a fan of its inclusion really. Like, it's definitely not vacuous but maybe slightly tactless. I'd rather she took some audio from a movie or something to convey the metaphor rather than an event where people actually died.

At the same time, maybe this disaster had a lasting effect on her. In which case, it's a personal inclusion. It's her art and the album is about her So I'm not going to say she shouldn't have used it.

Since I'm not offended and I've experienced references like this in music before (tragic deaths, riots, public events), it was interestingly used and I get it and understand it. I would 100% get the fuss if it was on a song about sex and explanations were unreachable but thats not the case.

Bey will always be loved by the GP so whilst there will be a bandwagon of uneducated people on her ass for the next few weeks acting like she murdered a bunch of children, it will only have a positive effect in the end.

This quote from the Billboard article forgets that this song is not using the sample for shock value, nor would it be a problem if a song were to use Walter Cronkite's words if it was done in a way that made sense. There are countless songs about JFK's assassinations. Are they insensitive?

But it is relevant to the song.

Owl City used it, or used a Reagan quote after the accident, to be more precise and I think it was okay.



If I'm honest, I don't really get the reference to it in XO and find it kind of pointless. I can see why people would find it offensive, however, it doesn't really bother me. Plus, radio can clearly edit it out if it becomes too troublesome. I don't think Beyoncé really needs to worry.
