REVOLT: "Queen of Pop Britney is back"
Quote:
The Queen Of Pop opened her 'Piece Of Me' residency at Vegas' Planet Hollywood on Friday night.
Britney's back.
Following in the footsteps of notable musical acts like Celine Dion, Elton John, and Boyz II Men, who in the assumed twilight of their careers have decided to take to the Las Vegas stage to strut their stuff for their most everlasting fans, last night, Britney Spears kicked off her "Piece Of Me" residency in Sin City. Named after the hit single from her 2007 comeback album, the residency will find the singer performing close to 100 dates throughout 2014 and 2015.
On Friday night, in front of a crowd of nearly 5,000 - including pop royalty like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Katy Perry - who gathered at Planet Hollywood's Axis Theater to see the Queen Of Pop revisit her eight-album discography, Spears employed a truly extravagant stage setup equipped with intricate costumes, high-flying acrobatics, and elaborate theatrics, proving with authority that she's a one-woman Broadway show, and she's here to work, bitch.
Over the course of 90 minutes (and seven outfit changes), the diva ran through two dozen of her most notable hits, including "Circus," "Womanizer," "Lucky," "Crazy," "I'm A Slave 4 U," "Oops… I Did It Again," and "…Baby One More Time," as well as newer hits like "Work Bitch" and "Perfume," from her November album Britney Jean.
All told, throughout the set Spears set out to establish that among the very pop icons in attendance and her potential competition in the likes of Lady Gaga and Rihanna, at the age of 32, she's still very much a relevant contender, and in some ways, the antecedent to pop music's brightest stars.
With still-solid dance moves, a voice as booming as ever, and enough energy to pack out an arena 100 nights over, Spears is in rare form. And with two years of already-locked-down dates at Axis ahead of her, she'll have the freedom to improvise, in turn only making the "Piece Of Me" spectacle even grander.
Watch her perform "Work Bitch" below, and pick up tickets to the ongoing residency here.
