Girl, what are you trying to prove? Notice how you can check off "Yes..." and then check off "Black". That is exactly what I'm trying to say. You can be both Hispanic and black. Mixed refers to being racially mixed. You can't racially be Hispanic and black. If you look up "mixed origin" you will only find results about race. As a fellow sister I say this with all sincerity, please stop.
And that is the issue, they consider Latino to be their race.
They don't wanna have to check black or white, and it's not fair to them that it makes them choose.
The Census Bureau has sparked debate with a proposal to redefine Latinos as a racial category. The agencys exploration into a new classification system stems from concern over the fact that some 18 million Latinos declined to identify their race in 2010.
'Latino' is not a race. These forms accommodate for the people that feel awkward being forced to pick White, Black, Asian or Pacific Islander for race when Latino or Hispanic isn't there. I used to just check all of them
And self-hate is big with Dominicans unfortunately. I have some family that will go to the grave identifying as white when....:
Dominicans have a LONG history of anti-Black racism and self-hate that stems from a deep-seated rivalry with Haiti. 90% of them are still at least somewhat African.
And that is the issue, they consider Latino to be their race.
They don't wanna have to check black or white, and it's not fair to them that it makes them choose.
Dur.
I respectfully disagree. It is my strong belief that people of African ancestry should acknowledge their African ancestry just as well as any of their cultural/ethnic bonds.
Hispanic just means Spanish-speaking and Spanish-influenced culture no matter what people try to make it mean. (No offense to any Hispanic people here.)
I (African-American) speak English and Haitians speak Creole and French. We're not Hispanic. Dominicans speak Spanish and are Hispanic. But we all Black, regardless of language, culture, etc.
And that is the issue, they consider Latino to be their race.
They don't wanna have to check black or white, and it's not fair to them that it makes them choose.
Dur.

That's because a lot of Hispanics have a very ambiguous racial background. Centuries of mixing of different races has them completely unsure of their racial history. I know plenty of Hispanics who hate filling out forms that ask for race, because they don't know. That's why they want to add Latino as a race.
