I have seen xmas everywhere. It makes me wonder why people who won't write Christmas even celebrate when the same people are in church every Sunday with their families. Are they too lazy to write out the name 'Christ'? Do they not know that the holiday is to celebrate the birth of Christ?
If you can't say or write Christ, then why celebrate? Using X in His place is blasphemy.
I had a substitute in one of my theology classes that told me the reason for that was because the "X" represented the cross Jesus would eventually die on, because someone asked her if it was blasphemous. She had been teaching theology for years and was retired, so I'm pretty sure she knew what she was talking about. Also, in Ancient Christian art, χ and χρ are abbreviations for Christ's name. Most people probably do it out of laziness, though.
