Queen Yoko didn't say that Gaga is the sole reason art "survived" this year. She's attributing its current (relative) relevance in the mainstream of art to those artists who 'stuck their neck out' to keep their artsy-ambitions in mainstream and pop sphere.
While I do think Gaga's whole ARTPOP shtick has come off somewhere between clumsy, hamfisted and just plain irrelevant to the music, I don't disagree with Yoko's statement. No one beyond academics checks for high art culture unless it's shoe-horned into pop offerings (largely in the visuals) and people like Gaga and Kanye have been doing it repeatedly in their recent work (with varying degrees of success).
