Quote:
Emeli Sandé, Adele and Ed Sheeran have been named as some of the artists who have helped push record sales in the music industry- which has reportedly enjoyed astonishing profits of £3.5 billion in the last year.
According to UK Music which measures profits in the recorded and live music industry in addition to the salaries of the 100,000 full time workers the UK industry employs, 'Read All About It' hitmaker Emeli Sande, Grammy-winner Adele and 'Lego House' crooner Ed Sheeran enjoyed incredible sales around the world in 2012, and Emeli etc boosted the UK sales margins by £72 million.
Emeli has enjoyed ongoing success with her debut album 'Our Version of Events' which featured the hit singles 'Heaven' and 'Next To Me' while Adele took the world by storm with her second album '21,' which has just been crowned the biggest selling album on Amazon.com of all time.
According to the website, musicians, lyricists and composers contribute the most to the music economy with £1.6 billion profits generated while live music also amasses £662 million of the industry. Recorded music rakes in £634 million, music publishing £402 million, music representatives £151 million and music producers and record studios bring in a combined £80 million.
Jo Dipple, chief executive of UK Music, explained the statistics: “Our music might be fun, but it's also a formidable asset to the UK. The Government has said it wants to support the creative industries but until now it's not had the precise data to hand. It does now."
“A realistic picture of the how the industry is made up will lead to a better understanding of what investment and regulatory environment is needed to help our industry thrive. It's a great UK success story, but now it can be even better understood and developed,” she added.
