It is not uncommon in many of the poorer places in the world for women to also use stones in boiling water to make a kind of soup because they have little else.
The problem is not a lack of food, it is the uneven distribution of food and resources. Many of the poor areas in South America, Africa and Asia for example or rich in resources, they have many of things we in the wealthy areas of the West lack and have to import but because of strangle hold on them we end up getting a lot of their food and resources (and clothing/products/services), very cheaply, and they end up with little to nothing. That coupled with corrupt governments and ruling bodies (with their people and Western corporate or governing officials) in their areas that can keep or misuse any payments they get. There are places in Africa for example that have little to no clean drinkable water but plenty of coca-cola
Some countries are turning this around, China, Indian and Russia for example by responding and creating as much demand as possible from the West but through corruption. China lacks human, animal and environmental rights, India is in a messy state with mixed Muslim/Christian/Hindu officials and Russia sold out it's people to capitalism to benefit a couple of cities and make them into world class tourist sites whilst putting together it's clever energy plans for the future.
There are also many places being affected by the pollution over the centuries from the West, many of these places would seem to us idyllic and clean but have become contaminated through the spread of our actions and now other countries are catching up industrially and need to learn from the West's mistakes. So in those places people are now suffering from weather problems and food shortages too.
