Yea that's why UJ got more praise from the critics and the general public. Bruno isn't channeling a certain artist, it's more of an era of music and that's why with UJ he focused more on his live band and they shared the spot light with him on the stage. And he didn't put much thought into music videos too because he wanted all to be about the music itself just like it was the thing in the 70's, music videos were basically live performances. He knows exactly what he's doing and it was all intentional, he never denied it.
He could have easily kept the same style by releasing songs like Grenade and I bet they would have become more successful than locked out of heaven but he chose not to do so.
