I don't think it's THAT different because there's been a lot of hip hop-influenced songs getting #1 this year (Thrift Shop, Harlem Shake, Can't Hold Us, Blurred lines, Royals, The Monster), but it's been mainly white artists. 2012 was more extreme, since that year was all pop/alternative (although I thought the Gotye, Maroon 5, Flo Rida and Adele's #1s that year were great). Also, some of the 2003 #1s like Get Busy and Hey Ya! are quite pop.
