I think it is the other way around. Downloading is just part of our society. It's harder to download movies than to download music. If downloading movies was easy and didn't take up a lot of GB/storage, I'm sure DVD's would decline as well.
In other words, blame iPod's and iTunes. Oh and all the illegal downloader software "Napster" and "Limewire"

DVD's sell because there are more to DVD's than CD's. DVD's are a visual experience. People would rather have a visual experience than an audio one. It has been that way since television was first invented many years ago. Napster is not illegal anymore by the way. They used to offer illegal music but they don't anymore. For the record, it is pretty easy to download movies but it does take up a lot of space like you said.
