Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle Take Aim at the Oscars
The New York Film Critics Circle crowns American Hustle best picture
Quote:
As often happens towards the end of the calendar year, a late contender is surging in the Oscar race. The New York Film Critics Circle named American Hustle best picture on Tuesday. The film also won best screenplay and best supporting actress for Jennifer Lawrence.
After early Oscar buzz for films like 12 Years a Slave, Fruitvale Station and Dallas Buyers Club, David O. Russel’s American Hustle — which is set for a late Dec. 13 release — is beginning to catch fire. Russell’s last two films, The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, were both nominated for Academy Awards.
So it isn’t so far-fetched that a Russell film could finally get a win, especially considering that the director is recycling critically-acclaimed actors from his last two films to play the four leads in this movie: Amy Adams and Christian Bale both got Oscar noms for 2010′s The Fighter, and Bale won; Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper were in contention to win Academy Awards last year, and Lawrence took home an Oscar. Plus Russell added Jeremy Renner, who has been nominated for two Oscars, to the ensemble.
Yes, they’re all in over-the-top 70s costumes. And yes, Bradley Cooper’s hair looks ridiculous. But with early critical acclaim and these NYFCC awards under its belt, American Hustle could go all the way.
NYFCC has selected for its 2013 awards:
BEST PICTURE: American Hustle
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
SCREENPLAY: Eric Singer and David O. Russell, American Hustle
Almost as certain as her losing it, but it doesn't matter, I'm sure the young Meryl Streep completely slayed this movie, and she has many years left for an amazing career.
She might get a nomination, but she won't get an Oscar.

Plot twist: Jennifer instead gets nominated for best actress as Katniss Everdeen
She was great, but popular YA and fantasy novel adaptations don't get actors nominations
(I wonder why, though. Some LOTR actors slayed and I don't think any of them got a nom)
Lupita may win at the Oscars, she has just lost only by one vote in NY.
But then again if there are two strong contenders who happens to be black they could lose both.
The voters are WW and I think even Oprah is outside the US not that much well known.
All of those eligible for voting aren't random idiots. They will know who the hell Oprah is. They are intelligent people who are in the entertainment industry, which Oprah has been Queen of for years. It's also mandatory that they watch each film and performance that is nominated, so if there happens to be a dummy who doesn't know who Oprah is they will learn fast. So that excuse is out the door.
Don't worry! This is only an award from the New York Film Critics Circle! This doesn't mean she is going to win the Oscar. It does up her status in the competition so far, but there are many other critic's awards coming.
