Discussion: Is it all over for Katy Perry?

Following the huge success of anthem Roar, there is no reason why Katy Perry's new single Unconditionally should flop. It's catchy yet emotional, radio-friendly yet not generic, and is an excellent second single choice for the Prism era (after all, if Wrecking Ball is smashing, why shouldn't Unconditionally?).

Yet Unconditionally is a flop flop flop, failing to reach the top 10 in the US, and it's poor performance has put the Prism era in jeopardy. Do you think the song marks the start of Katy's inevitable decline from chart prominence? There are no other stand-out tracks on the album which can save the era IMO, and baring in mind Katy is slow at making albums, she may loose momentum and become a forgotten soul.

So, what are your thoughts on this? Is Katy destined for a Paula Abdul-style fall, or did Unconditionally flop because it was overshadowed by Roar and the next Prism single will pick things up?
At least she went out with a ROAR!

PS if the rest of the era flops I think she should do AI judging and then release gospel albums like Fiona Apple.

Uncle has everything to be a huge christmas hit. I don't understand its floppage. Sometimes you just realize pop music is so unpredictable as far as the charts are concerned.

Unconditionally underperformed, nothing wrong with that. She was bound to have a single underperform sooner or later. In any case, the fact that you're saying the Prism era is in jeopardy when her album is still selling well is laughable. Roar's longevity had an effect on the song, but it's also not as catchy as her previous singles. Great song though

Also, no more smashes left on the album? Dark Horse, Walking on Air, Legendary Lovers, and even This Is How We Do, Birthday, and International Smile say hi.

Explain to me why it flopped then. There doesn't seem to be any logical reason other than she's fading (or Unconditionally was overlooked due to the huge success of Roar).

It was obvious (as she stated) that she isn't trying to mimic Teenage Dream's success. That, in terms of singles success, was an anomaly and will probably not happen again for a very long time. Katy and Capitol will be just fine.

She's over for this era. There is nothing that can save this era from continuing to tank. She should've recorded a good album, or at least more than one radio-friendly song.

Dark Horse could've done something, but the buzz is gone. See you in a year Katy, and you better bring it or it WILL be the END!

+ she released the worst video of her career and gave a forgettable performance at the AMAs. This song is just not destined to smash.

1) There are plenty of songs left on the album that can smash. One of them, Dark Horse, has been outperforming lead singles and is working it's way up rhythmic radio without getting a release.

2) Katy is not slow at making albums, relatively speaking. My other fave is Nelly Furtado so I would know what 'being slow at making albums' really means. Wide Awake was released in May of 2012, Prism dropped in October 2013. Not that large of a gap tbh.

3) Roar is definitely overshadowing Uncle as of now, the longevity of that song is spectacular.
