Poll: If Applause was a flop WW then why did ARTPOP debut so high?

I always hear that "Applause" was apparently only a moderate hit in the United States and a flop worldwide. So if "Applause" was a flop worldwide, then how did ARTPOP become the largest female debut this year worldwide when other stars had much larger hits?

Options:

1. ARTPOP sold WW off her name alone.
2. Applause wasn't a flop worldwide.
3. I don't know.

Frontloaded sales because of her big fanbase. I mean look at Applause's chartrun in France for example, it debuted at #3, but it also Gaga's third biggest flop there after You and I and MTN and won't even sell half of what Judas did there.

Those frontloaded sales are good for people like the OP to brag about first week sales, but now we're also seeing ARTPOP having huge drops literally everywhere (out of top20 in France, NL, 81% drop in the US).

If she had a proper hit, she would have sold off of her name + hit single = BTW Debut

But according to some people Applause was such a massive radio slayage, yet she still couldn't debut with even half of what BTW did (even without the amazon deal).

It's so true. Every other pop tart this year had a "global" hit yet couldn't match Gaga's flop WW numbers. Like, omg. Some people like to abuse the word global because their fave is finally having a watered-down BTW moment.

Radio hit =/= billboard hit. In which it was, but not so much worldwide and it only peaked at #4.

Edit: But really, you can't deny it was a radio hit. It was. Obviously not a radio SMASH but with Gaga's radio track-record, a hit.

It is quite weird how Gaga had the highest debut for a female artist this year when Applause wasn't that big of a hit. People can't use the promo excuse since Katy & Miley have done more international promo for their eras.
