According to GQ's The Q blog, the 16-year-old singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Conner, is a "far cry" from the former Disney child stars-turned-singers.
"The difference between those kids and me," said Lorde, "is that I grew up completely normally and went to parties and had that experience. I am way less inclined to be like, 'Look! I'm ****ing mental!'
In an America where people are used to envelope-pushing pop queens and kings, the opinionated performer sets herself apart from them. She brings something completely different to the table than her counterparts, described the men's magazine.
"While we are certainly used to teen pop stars conquering America, Lorde is another thing altogether," wrote Jessica Hopper in the blog post. "Adults needn't be ashamed of putting her full-length album, Pure Heroine, on repeat; there's nothing guilty about this pleasure."
