While the singer-songwriter has managed to attract the ears of young listeners across the nation she apparently does not get why some of her musical peers have been as successful. Speaking with interviewmagazine.com, Lorde mentioned a few other entertainers, including two YMCMB rappers, that she feels creates music that does not relate to most people’s lives.

“Around the middle of last year I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana Del Rey,” said Lorde. ”They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn’t relate to me—or anyone that I knew. I began thinking, ‘How are we listening to this? They are completely irrelevant’.”

Weird considering she praises Nicki often now.

I think she means the things Nicki and Drake spit about sometimes (money, cars etc etc) doesn't relate to her (or didn't) or anyone she knew. Like, Lorde before she got her #1 wouldn't have really been able to relate to artists rapping about wealth etc.

Lorde doesn't call Nicki irrelevant AS AN ARTIST, her point was only that many things she addresses in her lyrics are hard to relate to for most people, or at least most young people of her age, according to her. Her choice of words was to refer to this as Nicki being "irrelevant", because some of her lyrics are "irrelevant", by which she just means unrelatable, to many people.

Yeah lol. It was obvious what she meant. What they rap about is irrelevant to most peoples lives.

Sounds like her just having another "Why are we at a party?" type statements. So thoughtful. So deep.
