And the Carrie fans have a point, considering their fave is a country artist. Loads of people said the same about gaga when she said she was considering doing country. She even did a country version of born this way; and her fourth single from btw (you & I) went to country stations even before she performed it as a duet with Sugarland during the 2011 Grammy nominations. Kelly Clarkson is one of the few who has pulled the switch of genres off but Adele did a cover of Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" with Darius Rucker (rocker turned country singer). My point is plenty of people with good chops for pop have considered and pursued the idea to go country but it hasn't gone as well as they hoped. It's not shade to JT, but country fans would know what they are talking about as they actually follow the genre.

Not all of these artists made country songs, and Kelly Clarkson is not successful in country music. She's respected, but her only country material to be successful, "Don't You Wanna Stay," was a duet. She's putting in the work, but she hasn't reaped the benefits yet. None of those other girls even tried releasing country singles.
Country is more about artist perception than it is music because it's not as competitive as Top 40, the awards shows are unashamedly rigged (anyone winning over Carrie Underwood, let alone Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clakrson, is a mess) and image is based more off of morality. I could see JT doing well because he never shies away from award shows (Grammies, VMAs) and he's shown time and time again he'll put out a song that degrades an ex as long as it will boost his fame.
