Lorde's 'Royals' Reigns On Hot 100 For Eighth Week
Lorde's "Royals" leads the Billboard Hot 100 for an eighth week, keeping Eminem's "The Monster," featuring Rihanna, at bay at No. 2 for a second frame. The latter song is closing in on the summit, however, threatening to take over at No. 1 perhaps as soon as next week. Meanwhile, Pitbull and Ke$ha branch out into the top 10 with their own team-up, "Timber."
Let's get into all the numbers, as we do each Wednesday.
"Royals" crowns the Hot 100 Airplay chart for a fifth week with 160 million audience impressions (down 5%), according to Nielsen BDS. It drops 1-2 on the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart, after six weeks in charge, with 2.3 million on-demand U.S. streams, according to BDS (down 2%). It rebounds to its No. 2 peak on the overall Streaming Songs chart (7.1 million U.S. streams, down 2%) and slips 2-3 on the Hot Digital Songs chart (158,000 downloads sold, down 5%, according to Nielsen SoundScan), which it led for five weeks.
"Royals" commands Hot Rock Songs for a 12th week and reaches the top 10 (11-10) on the Adult Contemporary airplay chart.
Eminem's "The Monster" bullets at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for a second week after debuting at No. 3 two weeks ago. The collaboration claims the chart's top Airplay Gainer award for a second week and adds Digital Gainer honors for the first time. It vaults 12-8 on Hot 100 Airplay with a 43% increase to 80 million. With the rise, Rihanna scores her 22nd Hot 100 Airplay top 10, moving her to within one of Island Def Jam labelmate Mariah Carey's record for the most top 10s (23) dating to the chart's December 1990 launch. It's Eminem's ninth top 10 and first since his prior Rihanna-assisted song "Love the Way You Lie" spent eight weeks atop Hot 100 Airplay in 2010.
"Monster" returns for a second week at No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs (4-1) with 243,000 downloads sold (up 62%, after last week's sum was deflated due to iTunes' Complete My Album returns). "Monster" soars 8-3 on Streaming Songs (6.1 million, up 24%) and takes over atop On-Demand Songs (3-1; 2.6 million, up 40%). The cut is Eminem's first On-Demand Songs No. 1 and Rihanna's second, after "Diamonds" shined at the summit for six weeks beginning a year ago this month.
"Monster" spends a third week in charge of both Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Rap Songs.
Eminem and Rihanna's song moves closer to dethroning "Royals" on the Hot 100. After an 18% difference in overall Hot 100 chart points separated the songs last week, the margin is halved to 9% this week. "Royals" is down by 7% and "Monster" is up by 2%.
Miley Cyrus' former two-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Wrecking Ball" remains at No. 3. It returns for a seventh week atop Streaming Songs (2-1; 8.7 million, up 11%) and lifts 5-4 on Hot 100 Airplay (113 million, up 1%). On Hot Digital Songs, which it led the week of Sept. 28, it retreats 7-10 (105,000, down 13%). "Ball" concurrently becomes Cyrus' second No. 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 radio airplay chart.
Avicii revisits his No. 4 Hot 100 peak with "Wake Me Up!" (5-4). It stays at its No. 2 highpoint on Hot 100 Airplay (147 million, down 2%) and rules Dance/Electronic Songs for an 11th week. "Wake" also tops the Adult Top 40 chart, making Avicii the first core EDM act to rule the ranking in its 17-year archives.
Katy Perry's former two-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Roar" descends 4-5. Of the three main Hot 100 component charts, it ranks highest on Streaming Songs (5-4; 5.8 million, up 7%).
Meanwhile, "Unconditionally," the second single from Perry's album PRISM (4-5 on the Billboard 200), cracks the top 20 on the Hot 100 (21-16) and Hot Digital Songs (26-19; 53,000, up 2%), after becoming her 13th top 10 on Mainstream Top 40.
OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" rises to a new Hot 100 peak (7-6), while becoming the band's third Hot 100 Airplay top 10 (11-9; 78 million, up 24%). 2007's "Apologize" (billed as by Timbaland featuring OneRepublic) reached No. 3 on the chart and "Good Life" peaked at No. 8 in 2011. "Stars" shoots 3-2 on Hot Digital Songs (163,000, up 7%) and marks the group's first Streaming Songs top 10 (14-10; 4 million, up 18%).
Imagine Dragons' "Demons" likewise hits a new Hot 100 high (9-7), also with gains in all of the chart's metrics. It jumps 10-5 on Hot Digital Songs (129,000, up 17%); bullets again at No. 6 on Hot 100 Airplay (103 million, up 8%); and rises 21-18 on Streaming Songs (2.9 million, up 13%).
Drake's No. 4-peaking "Hold On, We're Going Home," featuring Majid Jordan, falls 6-8 on the Hot 100. It tops R&B Songs for an eighth week.
Fresh off the buzz of her host/musical guest duties on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" (Nov. 16), and as she becomes the new leader on the Billboard 200 with "ARTPOP," which arrives at No. 1 with 258,000 sold,
Lady Gaga tallies a 14th week in the Hot 100's top 10 (10-9) with "Applause," encompassing the entire run of the set's lead single.
Meanwhile, second radio track "Do What U Want," featuring R. Kelly, flies 48-18 on the Hot 100 after debuting at No. 13 three weeks ago; the pair performed the disco-tinged track on "Saturday Night Live."
Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Pitbull's "Timber," featuring Ke$ha, soars into the bracket with a 15-10 hike. The song, which, like Avicii's "Wake Me Up!," combines EDM and stomp-and-clap folk elements (aka, folktronica), powers 8-4 on Hot Digital Songs (144,000, up 20%), 25-16 on Streaming Songs (2.9 million, up 43%) and 29-17 Hot 100 Airplay (48 million, up 27%).
"Timber" marks Pitbull's ninth Hot 100 top 10 and Ke$ha's 10th. Pitbull had last reached the region with "Feel This Moment," featuring Christina Aguilera, which peaked at No. 8 in April. Ke$ha was last in the top 10 earlier this year with her No. 2-peaking "Die Young." Four years ago this month, she first appeared in the top tier with her debut hit "TiK ToK," which went on to spend 10 weeks at No. 1.
