iPad Air weekend sales could be as high as 15 million units.

Apple likes to brag about how many devices were sold during opening weekend. They usually have a well-written press release with the sales numbers, first thing Monday morning. However, the company has yet to produce such a press release this time around. Either Apple is embarrassed by low sales of the new iPad Air, or they have decided to wait until the iPad mini launches later this month to give us the low down. It is more likely the latter, especially since numerous app analytics firms have reported that iPad Air sales are approximately five times higher than the fourth-generation iPad during opening weekend.
Apple normally announces sales figures after the first weekend launch of a new product. However, the status quo has changed a bit, since Apple didn’t launch the new iPad mini alongside the iPad Air last Friday. The company likes to combine all sales numbers to keep us guessing about which tablets were getting the most love.
Based on what it looked like at my local Apple store, I would have assumed that the iPad Air had the smallest launch ever. The store opened at 8:00 a.m. to a line of only about 100 people. Normally, it is three times that for a product launch. However, after speaking with an Apple employee, it came to light that more people had taken advantage of Apple’s new in-store pick up feature than had stood in line first thing in the morning. I was told that there were at least 200 tablets on reserve in the back room. So, if you were surprised to see that there weren’t people standing in line to get an iPad Air at your local Apple retail store, it could be that they had simply ordered one for in-store pick up.
Additionally, you can still order your iPad Air from the company’s website and it is ready to ship within 24-hours. For previous launches, Apple has run out of tablets within a few days and shipping times have dropped from next-day to two or three weeks. It is possible that Apple has finally fixed its supplier woes.
According to TechCrunch, Apple may have sold as many as 15 million iPad Airs over the weekend. Those numbers may seem too high, but app analytics firms have published their own data showing that iPad Air use was significantly higher during the first three days of launch than the fourth-generation iPad and the iPad mini last year.
According to the report, app analytics firm Fiksu found that, within the first three days of launch, approximately 0.88 percent of customers, using apps that had the companies analytics code embedded, started using the apps on an iPad Air. Last year, only 0.15 users had activated apps on a fourth-generation iPad and 0.22 percent used an iPad mini.
App analytics firm Mixpanel showed that 1.54 percent of traffic of their clients’ apps was from the iPad Air. Additionally, Mixpanel’s numbers showed that the first and second-generation had the largest drop in app activity, implying that early adopters who were holding out may have finally switched to the iPad Air.
Last year, Apple confirmed three million new tablets, including the fourth-generation and the iPad mini, were sold within the first weekend. If the app analytics numbers are correct, the iPad Air will have had the biggest opening launch of any device that Apple has ever sold.

To sum up, the statistics of the new iPad Air usage would indicate that up to 15 million units have been sold.
Once the iPad Mini: Retina has a first week sale report, Apple will announce the total iPad sale report for both (like the did with the iPhone 5S & 5C.
Looking good
