Maybe they're announcing a performance on ABC's New Years show? Makes sense, being on GMA and all.
ABC has crushed its competition in NYE ratings in the past few years. They had more viewers last year than NBC and Fox combined, and more than doubled them individually. I haven't seen any huge names perform on non-ABC New Years shows, so I can't imagine 1D performing on an NYE show that isn't the one on ABC.
On the topic of GMA, they may very well have its biggest win over "Today" in history (not in ratings, but in total viewership). It'd be even more embarrassing for NBC if 1D draw a larger crowd for GMA than they ever have for "Today".
