It looks like a solid white brick with ridges. But it’s supposed to be a succulent pork patty that serves the basis for one of McDonald’s most popular items: the McRib sandwich.
But an employee with a smartphone just happened to snap a picture of a slab of frozen McRib meat, fresh from the box at a McDonald’s somewhere out there. And now that photo has raced around the Internet, raising eyebrows and deadening appetites. It’s the exact opposite of McDonald’s marketing that always shows its fast food in only the best light.
Still, McDonald’s isn’t backing away from supporting its boneless McRib. Here’s what the company said in a statement in response to the photo:
"There are few things more legendary at McDonald’s than the McRib. It is a boneless, seasoned pork patty on a bun with slivered onions, two dill pickle slices and plenty of our sweet, smoky, barbecue style sauce. One reason our customers love the McRib is its fun and wonderful shape. Just like a burger patty is formed to be round and flat, we form the iconic McRib in the shape of traditional ribs. We then flash freeze the patty to seal in flavor and freshness, just like you freeze meat in your own freezer, before going to our restaurants. The McRib is also known for its iconic taste, which is why we use a quality cut of pork – pork shoulder – to give our McRib lovers a thicker, meatier McRib experience.”
Background on the McRib: One sandwich contains nearly 500 calories, 10 grams of saturated fat, and a whopping 890 milligrams of sodium.
So what do you think? Will this photo turn you off to enjoying a McDonald’s McRib in the future? Or is this all to be expected with fast food?
I work at McDonalds and I didn't think anything when I saw it frozen. It just looks like something that is frozen. It doesn't change much when it is cooked, just gets covered in sauce.
Plus the McRib looks good to me. Having worked there does not make me want to not try it. If anything, the sauce should be more of a turn off, since it usually stands around for a while.
It really isn't a big deal. Unprepared/frozen food obviously looks way different to how the finished thing looks. Surely most of us have accepted this by now?
Have these people ever seen frozen food before? That's kinda how it looks...
And kiii at anyone who thinks McDonald's is the only offender. Every major fast food place and even some sit-down restaurants serve pre-made food that is just thawed and heated up.
Did people think they cut the meat right in the backroom or something? It obviously has to get frozen and then delivered. I don't eat McDonalds but it looks fine to me, considering what it is and who it's for.
