Some of the sponsorships don't even start until December. ALSO we have the Thanksgiving special to keep her strong in the top 10 for the rest of the month. Just wait for her black Friday boost!

Total - 780 - 800K for 2013

LADY GAGA (UNIVERSAL)

Rating: 3 ½ stars

Lady Gaga has been banging on about being a performance artist for years. On ARTPOP she's put her mouth where her money is. This is a brave release for a major pop star in 2013 - it's literally more art than chart.

A Katy Perry album is technically an album but really just a load of generic tracks desperate to fit in with what's on radio and sell maximum copies. ARTPOP is defiantly artistic and many of the songs work in the context of the whole album's vision but would flounder if plucked out to be as a single. That's a bold move in a world of super- short attention spans.

And even when a song sounds like a hit, Gaga wails about pigs (Swine) or gets Tourettes in German (G. U. Y) to potentially commercially sabotage them. In hindsight The Fame Monster seems relatively straightforward. now.

Let's Dance opened the door for American pop acts to go electro. For Born This Way, Gaga rebelled with '80s rock ballads. ARTPOP goes back to the digital beats, but it's refreshingly bonkers. Aura is incredible - produced by Russian techno newcomer Zedd and Israeli trance kings Infected Mushroom. It's not exactly the dream team you hunt out for a radio-ready hit.

The brilliant Sexxx Dreams sounds like one of those really filthy songs Prince used to give his lady friends back in the early '80s. The chorus is a killer but Gaga's nocturnal admissions could well make Top 40 radio blush. And the brooding critic-baiting (it's a theme on ARTPOP) Do What U Want is the best thing R Kelly's been involved with since Ignition.

It's a testament to how much of her DNA Gaga injects into her songs that she makes Will I Am/David Guetta co-write Fashion hers, not theirs. Phew.

If she stays on this honest but mainstream-alienating track she could conceivably become one of the world's most famous and interesting cult acts.
