I don't hear nasal voices.
If you look back end 70's the punk movement did fight against the supergroups but soon the New Romantics just wanted to make music without prejudice (hence Heaven 17 kicked off the comeback of Tina Turner), they created melodies like hymns that we have not seen before, it was astonishing - Heaven 17, Spandau Ballet, Howard Jones, Depeche Mode etc. almost every week a new smash, When Tears For Fears brought out Shout it was immediately number one in the UK, it didn't exist something like that before.
Lorde stripped back the song to the dark core but as a reminiscence to the 80's her voice has multiple layers, intelligent.
