Jay Z, Roc-A-Fella, and Atlantic Records and others are the newest targets of the highly litigious TufAmerica record label; its busy legal team is asserting that Hova et al. illegally sampled the song "Hook & Sling" on 2009 hit "Run This Town." TufAmerica bought the rights to the song, sung by Eddie Bo and produced by Al Scramuzza, in the mid-'90s.
TufAmerica is seeking damages as well as proceeds from Jay Z's song, which featured Rihanna and Kanye West. TufAmerica was also behind the copyright case filed against the Beastie Boys a day before Adam Yauch's death and ended up with a victory for TufAmerica. The company has also sued EMI over infringement within a John Legend song, Christina Aguilera over her song "Ain't No Other Man," and Kanye West for two offenses on his album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy."
For his part, Jay Z has a rough couple weeks, coming under fire for his collaboration with luxury retailer Barney's, which has been accused of racial profiling. In addition, Carter may have run up against MLB player-client rules after giving his Yankee client Robinson Cano a $30,000 watch.
