Love my school, but this has been a problem here for years. It's even worse that the majority of our black students are admitted as athletes and not just as students.

How? The article says that there are few black students in the school, why is that? Race isn't looked at when accepting students. Why should they bend the rules to give them an advantage? And I've also been seeing people write that less asians should be accepted...

Reminds me a bit of the european jew laws from the first half of the 19th century, where too many jewish people were going to university, so they only accepted a certain ammount. That didn't lead to good events iirc.

IIRC Blacks are at more of an economic disadvantage than their caucasian counterparts.Many schools with student bodies that are majority black CONSTANTLY stay underfunded as opposed to their majority white counterparts.Don't EVEN get me started on the out of school environments many blacks/hispanics have to deal with on a daily basis.

IDK if Affirmative Action is the right way to achieve diversity BUT please don't ever imply that blacks aren't as competent and rely on 'bent rules'

They should try harder

UCLA is a public school and not allowed to consider race in admissions; in contrast to many other elite schools their admission practices are relatively straightforward and predictable. Fact is that African-Americans often lag behind other races in SAT scores and grades, the most important considerations by far in admitting students to UCs. While I do believe this gap is due to systemic inequalities that need to be improved upon, there is verily little point in criticizing UCLA for their behavior as at the point of admission to college it is too late to meaningfully make a difference and aside from minor initiatives like additional outreach on part of UCLA to minorities when they are still several years away from applying, the matter is largely out of the hands of the college in the first place. Furthermore, if you're a minority with the credentials to get into UCLA it is likely that you could also get into a private college of a similar caliber that takes these differences into account and would be able to put you into a more diverse environment if that is something you desire.
