Rihanna Banked $500,000 for a 40-Minute Concert
Oleg Deripaska, a Russian billionaire, treated his colleagues and friends to a concert whose star, Rihanna, only charged $500,000.
The best coverage of the party last week was in Tvoi Den (a Russian newspaper), which headlined its article "Deripaska Gave Abramovich a Black Woman for $500,000." There's a real craft to writing headlines like that, which pack so many offensive implications into so little space. Still, the article wasn't so bad, even giving Rihanna the privilege of a name at the end of the second paragraph. Abramovich refers to Deripaska's friend Roman Abramovich, who turned up at the party. Abramovich is Russia's richest citizen, with a net worth of $18.7 billion. Deripaska is only worth a paltry $13.3 billion.
Despite her $500,000 fee, Rihanna's performance only lasted 40 minutes. Additionally, according to Tvoi Den, Rihanna insisted on the presidential suite at the Ritz-Carlton for her six-hour stay. It comes with an "oversized dressing room" and a security room with an "autonomous energy supply system," the hotel's web site boasts.
But if we're speaking relatively, Rihanna actually came quite cheap. Last year, Vladimir Potanin, another Russian billionaire, paid singer George Michael $3.56 million to perform for about 15 minutes to ring in the New Year.
