Priyanka on Mariah stan phase;picks Rihanna over Katy & Gaga
Priyanka Chopra talks to Tushar Joshi of Filmfare about her favorite singers and her debut music album coming in 2014.
If you weren't an actress, would you have pursued singing?
No, I wanted to become an aeronautical engineer. Acting was sort of an accident... it was an opportunity that presented itself after winning Miss World, which was another accident. I just go with the flow. I was basically approached to become a singer by Universal and Interscope for this project they wanted to try to launch an Indian pop star. I wasn't sure about it, but they were persistent and I thought why not give it a shot?
Who are the singers you look up to? We hear you'd sing Mariah Carey songs back in the day...
That's a tough question! My list is endless: Michael Jackson to Mariah Carey and Rihanna to Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan.... I did have a very strong Mariah phase in high school though. I loved her voice and her music helped me get through a lot of things. I would sing her songs at the top of my lungs at the drop of a hat. (laughs)
How will you take time off to promote the album? Will films take a back seat?
Absolutely not... I believe I can balance both careers. I've scheduled my life in such a way that I'm able to give my undivided attention to both. I've always been good at multitasking, and I'm enjoying the challenge.
Since it's a pop album, what kind of sounds can we expect from you?
We're experimenting with different sounds and styles. It's definitely an upbeat pop album. There will be a bit of dance, a bit of R&B and a few ballads thrown in.
Between Katy Perry, Rihanna and Lady Gaga, who is your favourite pop singer of the moment? Please don't say they all are...
I do like them all, but if I had to choose, it would be Rihanna. I love her music and most of all her, her style... I think pop music is about more than just the music and voice. Rihanna makes the kind of music that I like, but I love her individuality that shines through her music.

That's not really the point from my perspective. She may or may not happen in the US, but the fact that she's trying will make it easier for the next Southeast Asian girl, who will make it easier for the next, and so on.
I read a while back that "Mimi" was her high school nickname and she still uses it on boarding passes when she goes on flights. I guess this is why.

You mean South Asian, but the idea is really accurate. I watched an interview with Jimmy Iovine and Troy Carter and they basically said Priyanka was approached to be the first experiment in Interscope's project to launch an Indian pop star. She said she doesn't expect anything, but another person will eventually come along.
