Panic! At The Disco’s Brendon Urie Opens Up About Nixed Fiona Apple Sample, Band’s New Approach
Apparently Fiona Apple doesn’t fancy herself much of a Panic! At The Disco fan. In a recent sit-down with REVOLT, Panic!’s frontman Brendon Urie revealed that “Miss Jackson,” the first single from the group’s fourth album – Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die! – originally sampled the songstress’ “Every Single Night” , but when it came time to clear the usage, Fiona was “so bummed” on Panic! that the band was forced to reconstruct the tune.
Still, frankly, it seems as though there couldn’t be a more fitting title for the group’s latest endeavor than Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die!, which nearly perfectly explains where the band is in its career. Perched on the near 10-year anniversary of their breakout debut, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, little of the Panic! of that era remains today. From shedding members to discovering dance music, Urie tells us that the group’s evolution was a natural and obvious one, done mostly to avoid the musical boredom so many bands fall into while striving to “return to their roots.”
Perhaps it’s that attitude and inspired innovation that led the band to sample Fiona in the first place. As Urie tells it, the record is heavily informed by his own personal listening habits, which have over the years turned to dance and hip-hop, both far from strangers of re-possessing material. And until now, that original version lifted from Fiona remained under wraps, but during our chat with the frontman, he for the first time shared clips of the original vision of the tune, which you can hear for yourself in the footage below.
Meanwhile, Panic! At The Disco’s new, evolved iteration will take its new album on the road for a massive tour, starting this month, which has already sold out a respectable number of dates. Expect the band who, according to Urie, have spent plenty of time taking notice of the EDM spectacle, to integrate plenty of production shenanigans into what he sells us on will be a night to remember.
